Grading and leveling in Cookeville and the Upper Cumberland
Grade is the slope the ground carries, and it decides where water goes. We grade residential lots so rain runs away from the house, level rough yards and pads, and shape the ground under every driveway and patio we pour, so the slab and the ground beneath it are one job.

What grading involves
Grading starts with reading how the lot already drains. Joe walks it, usually after looking at where water has been standing or cutting ruts, and works out what has to change: a low spot beside the foundation that needs fill, a yard that slopes toward the house, or a rough building pad that has to be cut level and compacted before anything can sit on it.
The crew then cuts high ground, fills low ground and shapes the surface to carry water where it should go. Fill is placed in lifts and compacted rather than dumped in one pile, because loose fill settles and takes whatever is on top of it along. Where a slab is going in, the finished grade is set to the slab thickness and base depth so the forms land at the right height.
How Morgan's grades a lot
The operator on the machine is one of our own W2 employees, and the person who bid the job supervises the work. Grading is easy to do roughly and hard to do right, and the difference shows up the first time it rains, so we do not leave it to a subcontractor.
Licensed and insured When the grading is prep for a driveway, patio or slab, Josh checks the grade and base compaction before the concrete crew sets a form, and the same company answers for both the ground and the concrete.
Questions homeowners ask
Can grading fix water coming into my crawl space or basement?
Often it can. A yard that slopes toward the house or a low spot against the foundation sends water straight to the wall. Regrading so the ground falls away from the house is the first fix and frequently the only one needed. Joe looks at the lot and says whether grading alone will handle it or whether drainage pipe is also needed.
Do I need grading before a new driveway?
Every driveway we pour is graded first. The ground is cut or filled to the right depth, shaped so the drive sheds water and compacted so the slab does not settle. That work is part of the driveway estimate rather than a separate job, and the driveway page explains the rest of the process.
How long does grading take?
Duration depends on how much dirt moves and how far it has to go. Wet ground cannot be graded or compacted properly, so the crew works around the weather.
